| MINICAMP UPDATE
posted 04/01/99 Morning Update - Thursday, April 1 It may have been April Fool's Day, but there was little fooling around as the Green Bay Packers began their second day of on-field work under new head coach Ray Rhodes. A one-hour, twenty-minute session was held inside the Don Hutson Center Thursday morning. Wide receiver Antonio Freeman, unsigned but Green Bay's franchise player, appeared at the workout, watching in street clothes. He later appeared in the locker room, joking with many of his teammates, including several offensive linemen and fellow pass-catcher Derrick Mayes. For the second straight day, the team's three quarterbacks took turns attempting to throw a football into a standing garbage can at a distance of roughly 40 yards. Rick Mirer came the closest to being successful, once hitting the front of the rubber barrel and narrowly missing another time. Quarterback Brett Favre took a minute to address the Wisconsin sports media following the workout, indicating that he was pleased with the team's first three workouts under Rhodes and liked the direction the team was taking. The Packers' 1999 playing schedule was released over the lunch hour, eliciting varied responses from players. Many liked the fact that the team received the NFL-maximum three games on "Monday Night Football" for a fourth straight season, in addition to a Sunday night game. Nearly all also took note of the club's November 1 matchup with the Seattle Seahawks and their former coach, Mike Holmgren, at Lambeau Field. |
