PACKERS SIGN RUNNING BACK BRENT MOSS, EX-WISCONSIN STAR, AS FREE AGENT

posted 04/07/99

The Green Bay Packers have signed running back Brent Moss, the third-ranking rusher in University of Wisconsin football history, as a free agent, Executive Vice President/General Manager Ron Wolf announced today.

Moss, a compact 5-8 and 225 pounds, was added to the roster after making a favorable impression during the Packers' initial minicamp last week.

"He had a solid minicamp," Ted Thompson, the team's director of player personnel, said of the former Badger standout. "He catches the ball well and he works hard. He does all the things that made him a good back at Wisconsin...It'll be interesting to see how that works out."

Moss, who has been out of football for two years, originally was signed as a free agent by the Miami Dolphins May 1, 1995. Waived August 27, 1995, he was signed to the St. Louis Rams' practice squad September 5 and later promoted to the active roster October 16. He subsequently rushed 22 times for 90 yards, a 4.1-yard average, and caught one pass for 3 yards while appearing in four games. Moss returned to training camp with the Rams in 1996, was placed on waivers August 26 in the final roster cutdown for the regular season and, prior to joining the Packers in last week's minicamp, had been out of football since.

Named the Most Valuable Player in the Badgers' 21-16 victory over UCLA in the 1994 Rose Bowl after rushing 36 times for 158 yards and 2 touchdowns, Moss ranks well up among the premier running backs in University of Wisconsin history. He is third in career rushing yards (3,428 yards in 694 attempts), in rushing attempts (694, behind only Billy Marek and Alan Ameche), and in career rushing touchdowns (34, behind Marek and Ron Dayne).

The 27-year-old Racine, Wis., resident also owns the second highest single-season rushing total, 1,637 yards in 1993, in school annals, and the third-most rushing touchdowns in a season, 16, also in 1993.

In another transaction, the Packers placed linebacker Toran James on waivers. James, a former San Diego charger, had been signed as a free agent March 10.
