PACKERS TO HOLD POST-DRAFT MINICAMP THIS WEEKEND (APRIL 23-25); MORE THAN 70 PLAYERS DUE TO REPORT; 10 FREE AGENTS AGREE TO TERMS

posted 04/19/99

Ray Rhodes, his first draft as head coach of the Green Bay Packers now behind him, will conduct his second off season minicamp this weekend.

More than 70 players - including the 12 athletes selected by the team in the National Football League draft over the weekend - are expected to report for the three-day camp which opens Friday (April 23) and will continue through the weekend. Thursday (April 22) is a travel day.

There will be two practices both Friday and Saturday and a final session Sunday morning.

Practices are scheduled to be held on the Ray Nitschke practice field, weather permitting. If conditions prevent outdoor workouts, practices will be conducted in the Don Hutson Center and thus not open to the public.

Defensive back Antuan Edwards of Clemson, the Packers' first round selection in the NFL draft over the weekend, will be introduced to the media at a press conference on Thursday afternoon.

Executive Vice President/General Manager Ron Wolf and the Packers' player personnel department have stayed busy following the draft, agreeing to contractual terms with 10 free agents after completing their 12 choices in the NFL's annual selection meeting.

The free agent additions include:
  • Linebacker Aaron Adams, Louisiana State, 6-2 and 227 pounds;
  • Defensive tackle Howard Burns, Lane College (Franklin, Tenn.), 6-3 and 290 pounds;
  • Tight end Alphonso Collins, East Carolina, 6-2 and 274 pounds;
  • Wide receiver Zola Davis, South Carolina, 6-0 and 183 pounds;
  • Cornerback Andre Dixon, Northeastern, 6-1 and 205 pounds;
  • Linebacker Deon Humphrey, Florida State, 6-3 and 233 pounds;
  • Linebacker Kevin McCullar, Texas Tech, 6-3 and 241 pounds;
  • Running back Basil Mitchell, Texas Christian, 5-10 and 199 pounds;
  • Center Mike Newell, Colorado State, 6-4 and 296 pounds; and
  • Offensive lineman Todd Neimeyer, Missouri, 6-4 and 295 pounds.

After having selected cornerbacks with their first three choices in the draft, the Packers have moved second-year pro Brian Manning back to wide receiver, the position he had played since entering the NFL in 1997. Manning spent the majority of the 1998 season on the team's practice squad as a receiver, then was signed to the club's active roster December 8 following a season-ending collarbone injury to wide receiver Bill Schroeder. He was transferred to cornerback earlier in the offseason by General Manager Ron Wolf, but now has been returned to his collegiate position by Wolf. Manning again will wear the number 82 that he had been assigned during the 1998 season.
