MINICAMP UPDATE
posted 04/23/99
Afternoon Update - Friday, April 23
Day 1 of the team's post-draft mini-camp wrapped up with a spirited practice lasting nearly two hours.
Following practice, some players were tested by new strength and conditioning coach Barry Rubin. Players were asked to bench press 225 pounds. Two rookies stole the show. Howard Burns, signed as an undrafted free agent out of Lane College, first dazzled his new teammates by benching 225 pounds 23 times. Later, offensive guard Craig Heimburger, a fifth-round draft choice out of the University of Missouri, matched that total.
Rookie cornerback Andre Dixon took part in the afternoon workout after missing the morning practice due to additional medical tests. Dixon is an undrafted free agent signee out of Northeastern.
Another undrafted rookie, running back Basil Mitchell of TCU, also missed this afternoon's workout due to additional medical testing.
The mini-camp continues Saturday with practices at 10:40 a.m. and 3:10 p.m. As of Friday evening, both workouts were set to be held outside on the Ray Nitschke practice field. Head Coach Ray Rhodes inspected the Nitschke field after this morning's practice and felt like it would be dry enough to use by Saturday morning.
