| MINICAMP UPDATE
posted 04/24/99 Morning Update « Saturday, April 24 Under clear skies on a bright, sunny day, the Packers made their first "public" appearance of 1999 this morning, practicing on Ray Nitschke Field before roughly 500 fans. Newly-signed wide receiver Michael Vaughn was injured early in the workout and carted off. The initial prognosis was that he had suffered a knee injury which was not considered serious. Further tests are planned. Another rookie pass catcher, seventh-round draft choice Donald Driver, provided the biggest play of the morning when he streaked up the left sideline, then laid out to make a diving grab of a Brett Favre pass. He later unsuccessfully dove for another ball. Wide receiver Brian Manning, who had spent the previous mini-camp at defensive back, himself made a sideline grab, stealing the ball away from rookie safety Chris Akins. Veteran wideout Robert Brooks was excused from practice on Saturday due to a family commitment, Head Coach Ray Rhodes said. Darren Sharper and Derrick Mayes fielded punts during a special teams period within practice. Sharper later made a nice interception of Rick Mirer during the final, "team" period of the workout. During one-on-one pass blocking drills, third-round draft choice Cletidus Hunt flashed the most promise. The rookie defensive tackle from Kentucky State displayed both good power and an effective outside pass rush. A second practice is scheduled for this afternoon at 3:10, also on Ray Nitschke Field. |
