The Green Bay Packers, improving their depth at linebacker, have signed former Oakland Raider Mike Morton as an unrestricted free agent, Executive Vice President/General Manager Ron Wolf announced today.
The 27-year-old Morton, a fifth-year professional from the University of North Carolina, played in 55 games during four seasons at Oakland, with 27 starts.
A 6-foot-4, 235-pound native of Kannapolis, N.C., he enjoyed his most productive season to date in 1997, when he started the first 11 games, amassing 76 tackles before suffering a season-ending back injury. He also was credited with three passes defensed and one fumble recovery.
Morton, a fourth-round draft selection in 1995, appeared in all 16 games in 1998, posting 13 tackles as a special teams performer, supplementing those contributions with one forced fumble and two fumble recoveries.
He played in 12 games a rookie, registering 13 special teams tackles, and in 16 games in 1996 with 6 starts, posting 45 tackles, two interceptions, one sack and three passes defensed.
"Mike will add quality depth to our linebacker corps," Reggie McKenzie, the Packers' director of pro personnel, said. "The more good players you can sign, it goes without saying, the better team you're going to have. And, in these days of free agency, they're harder to acquire."
Morton, a four-year letterman at North Carolina, where he once posted 20 tackles in a game, has been assigned jersey number 56.
