MINICAMP UPDATE
posted 06/07/99
Daily Update - Monday, June 7
"Wind" was the buzzword during Monday's mini-camp practice, the first of the second and final week before the players are given several weeks off leading into training camp. The two-plus hour session was followed by the same series of conditioning drills that all players were put through each day last week.
Extremely windy conditions affected much of the workout, especially the special teams portions. Punters Will Brice and Josh Bidwell watched helplessly as several of their kicks were picked up by the westerly winds and carried over the fence and into the parking lot of a nearby business. And on those punts which stayed within the bounds of the practice field, the returners trying to field them were in a virtually impossible situation.
If there was one saving element about the wind, it was that it helped keep the effects of the day's heavy mugginess to a minimum.
Quarterback Brett Favre Monday took several snaps from center Mike Flanagan in the shotgun formation, providing perhaps the first glimpse of a new element of the Green Bay offense under coordinator Sherm Lewis.
The day's big story, however, was the signing of top draft choice Antuan Edwards to a multi-year contract - the second straight year that the team has inked its number-one pick in June. Though he continues to be sidelined by April turf toe surgery, Edwards expressed relief at having his contract out of the way so early and optimism about his return to the field, saying, "I'm just glad my deal's done and I'm excited about being here. I'm healing real fast. There's no date set (for his return), but as quickly as possible."
Three players were not in attendance, having been waived early Monday morning - former University of Wisconsin running back Brent Moss, linebacker Antonio London and offensive tackle Antone Davis.
The mini-camp continues through Thursday of this week, with workouts at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, 11:15 a.m. on Wednesday and 10:10 on Thursday.
