MINICAMP UPDATE
posted 06/08/99
Daily Update - Tuesday, June 8
A hot, muggy day greeted the Packers during their two-hour workout Tuesday, a session which was followed by another round of conditioning drills.
Second-year wide receiver Corey Bradford continues to impress, at one point streaking down the right sideline to catch a bomb over free agent cornerback Keith Williams.
Three veteran players were excused from Tuesday's practice by Head Coach Ray Rhodes: defensive linemen Vaughn Booker (family commitment) and Santana Dotson (best man in a wedding), as well as wide receiver Derrick Mayes (personal business). None of the three is expected to return for the final two days of this mini-camp.
Rookie cornerback Mike McKenzie, one of two third-round draft picks, did practice, though he did so with a small cast on his right hand. McKenzie broke a bone on the top of the hand in Monday's workout, according to Rhodes, and will need to have the hand casted for about three weeks.
Strong safety LeRoy Butler, a non-participant in practice for much of the offseason due to ankle surgery, took part in a non-contact blitz drill near the end of the workout, in an effort to test out the ankle prior to training camp.
The mini-camp continues through Thursday of this week, with workouts at 11:15 a.m. on Wednesday and 10:10 on Thursday. Tomorrow's practice starts slightly later due to the "Breakfast of Champions" at St. Norbert College, which coaches and players will attend.
