MINICAMP UPDATE

Daily Update - Thursday, June 10

And then there was none. The next time that the Green Bay Packers take to the practice field will be July 26 - the first day of training camp - as the team Thursday wrapped up its third and final mini-camp of the offseason.

Head Coach Ray Rhodes was pleased with the results of the seven-day session, and equally happy that several veterans, such as quarterback Brett Favre, participated in the entire voluntary camp. "It was good to have the guys together for the last couple of weeks and we got good work done," Rhodes said. "From a practice standpoint, it's good to look up and see a Brett Favre out here the whole time. For him to be here and work throughout the seven-day camp, was great for the football team. It was great for our young guys to see that. I'm really pleased about the way he came in and approached this thing - all the running, all the things he did."

The attention-grabber of the day was a brief scuffle between offensive tackle Ross Verba and second-year linebacker Jude Waddy, the pair pushing and pulling at one another for several seconds before being separated by teammates. Rhodes did not seem to mind the interruption of practice.

"Quite naturally, that's not something that you want to encourage" said Rhodes, "but this is a violent football game. We've been together for seven days, and if somebody hasn't (ticked) somebody off in seven days, then maybe we have to question what we're trying to get accomplished. Tempers are going to flare and those things are going to happen. But I'm not for guys fighting all the time. But it let me know that I've got two guys who are going to fight."

The football play of the day was a nifty throw from rookie quarterback Aaron Brooks to Tyrone Davis, who has moved into the role of being the team's second tight end behind Pro Bowler Mark Chmura. Brooks hit Davis on a perfectly-executed seam route.

And what would a day of practice be without another round of conditioning drills, Rhodes putting his team through seven minutes of intense aerobic work on the field before sending them away for their final few weeks of "down" time.

Though in general he was happy with the results of this mini-camp, the first-year Packers coach indicated that there still is plenty of things on his personal "To Do" list when it comes to his football team.

"I feel pretty good about the work," Rhodes said, "but we've still got a lot of work to do. And we're anxious to see our young football players who weren't able to work, the injured guys - I'm referring to our first two draft picks (Antuan Edwards and Fred Vinson) in particular. We'll be excited to see those guys on the field when we get to training camp."

Which is only 46 days away.
