Vince Workman, a former running back for the team, has been named pro personnel assistant for the Green Bay Packers, Executive Vice President/General Manager Ron Wolf announced today.

Workman, who will assist Pro Personnel Director Reggie McKenzie, succeeds Will Lewis, who resigned in May to become pro personnel director for the Seattle Seahawks.

The 31-year-old Workman, who has been working toward a degree in communications at Ohio State, originally was Green Bay's second selection in the fifth round of the 1989 draft. A two-year starter at OSU, he spent his first four NFL seasons with the Packers, emerging as the team's leading rusher in 1992, his final season in Green Bay, gaining 631 yards in 159 attempts, a 4.0-yard average.

Workman subsequently signed on with Tampa Bay as a restricted free agent in 1993, a move which brought the Packers a compensatory, fifth-round draft pick. He divided the 1995 season between Carolina and Indianapolis, then closed out his 8-year pro career with the Colts in 1996.

As a Packer, Workman accumulated 2,531 all-purpose yards - 927 in 242 rushing attempts, a 3.83-yard average, 691 yards on 97 career receptions, a 7.1-yard average, and 913 on 56 kickoff returns, a 16.3-yard average.

A native of Buffalo, N.Y., he was a three-year letterman at Ohio State, gaining 1,882 yards on 412 rushing attempts (a 4.6-yard average) and scoring 13 touchdowns over his college career. Born Vincent Innocent Workman, Jr., he earlier had been a two-time all-state tailback at Dublin, Ohio, High School, also earning Parade All-America honors as a senior after rushing for 1,793 yards and 31 touchdowns.

Workman, who will assume his new duties early in July, is the father of four children - sons Vincent III, 9, and Troy, 2, daughter Jacque, 8, and stepson Tyler Shugarts, 15.
