The Green Bay Packers have signed cornerback Mike McKenzie, the first of their two third-round draft choices in last April's draft, Executive Vice President/General Manager Ron Wolf announced today.

A starter the past two-and-a-half years at the University of Memphis, where he played both cornerback and safety, McKenzie was a first-team All-Conference USA selection in both 1997 and '98. He finished his three-year collegiate career (1996-98) with 206 total tackles, 6 interceptions and 20 passes defensed, as well as 28 stops on special teams.

"We think Mike can be an outside player or an inside player," says Green Bay defensive coordinator Emmitt Thomas. "We'll try him outside first. But if we miss outside, we think that he can come inside and give us some depth and quality coverage at safety. He has great size, he can run and he's athletic."

A Miami native, the 6-foot, 190-pound McKenzie will report to the Packers' training camp along with other rookies on July 25.

Green Bay now has signed four of its 12 selections in the 1999 draft. Previously signed were first-round pick Antuan Edwards, a cornerback out of Clemson, and seventh-rounders Chris Akins and Donald Driver.
