The Green Bay Packers have claimed defensive end Jabbar Threats from the Jacksonville Jaguars on waivers, Executive Vice President/General Manager Ron Wolf announced today.

In another transaction, safety Kerry Cooks, a second-year pro, was placed on waivers.

Threats (pronounced "THREETS"), in his third NFL season, originally was signed by Jacksonville out of Michigan State as an undrafted free agent on July 15, 1997, following that year's supplemental draft.

The 6-5, 267-pound Springfield, Ohio, native played in 2 games in each of the 1997 and 1998 regular seasons, making the Jaguars' roster as a rookie after leading the team in preseason sacks (3.5) and forcing one fumble and making one fumble recovery.

In 1998, he played in the first two games of the regular season in the rotation at right defensive end. He suffered a sprained right knee in practice September 16, prior to the third game of the season, and subsequently was placed on injured reserve October 1 for the balance of the season.

As a collegian, Threats was a two-year starter at Garden City (Kan.) Community College before transferring to Michigan State in 1995. He started all 12 games for the Spartans that season and led the team with 11 tackles for losses of 43 yards. Threats also starred in MSU's Independence Bowl appearance following the '95 season, posting six tackles.

Cooks, a four-time letterman at the University of Iowa, had been claimed on waivers from the Minnesota Vikings on September 16, 1998. He later played in nine games, posting 5 tackles, 3 of them unassisted. He had been selected in the fifth round of the 1998 draft by Minnesota.
