Augmenting their linebacker group, as well as the quality of their special teams, the Green Bay Packers today re-signed veteran Lamont Hollinquest as a free agent, Executive Vice President/General Manager Ron Wolf announced today.
Hollinquest, a sixth-year pro who shared club leadership in special teams tackles with former Packers teammate Mike Prior in 1998, had signed on with Kansas City in the offseason interim (March 5), then recently became available when he was placed on waivers by the Chiefs July 21.
A valuable performer capable of backing up all three linebacker positions, Hollinquest started two games at right outside linebacker last season when George Koonce was sidelined by a hamstring problem, making the first start of his five-year pro career when he initially replaced Koonce in the starting lineup against Detroit October 15.
The 6-3, 250-pound USC alumnus additionally registered 13 tackles as a linebacker, 11 of them unassisted.
A special teams standout since joining the Packers as a free agent (January 18, 1996), he was runnerup to fellow linebacker Bernardo Harris for club kamikaze honors in 1996 with 15 tackles (13 solo) and emerged as the sole team leader in 1997 with 16 (12 unassisted).
Originally drafted by Washington in 1993, Hollinquest played for the Redskins in '93 and for most of the 1994 campaign before being waived near the end of his second season. Immediately claimed by Cincinnati, he later was waived during the ensuing, 1995 preseason and spent the remainder of that year out of football.
As a collegian, Hollinquest had been a two-year starter and four-time letter winner at USC.
Reassigned to his "old" Packers jersey number, 56, Hollinquest joined the team on the practice field this afternoon.
