PACKERS TRADE QUARTERBACK RICK MIRER TO JETS FOR DRAFT CHOICE

The Green Bay Packers have traded veteran quarterback Rick Mirer to the New York Jets for an undisclosed, future draft choice, Executive Vice President/General Manager Ron Wolf announced today.
Mirer, a seventh-year professional, was beginning his second season with the Packers, having signed on as a free agent just prior to the opening of the 1998 regular season.
The 29-year-old Notre Dame alumnus, the second overall selection in the 1993 NFL draft by the Seattle Seahawks in 1993, had played against the Jets in the Packers' preseason opener over the weekend, completing 5 of 12 passes for 63 yards, with one interception, and gaining 20 yards with his only rushing attempt.
Originally the second overall selection in the 1993 NFL draft by Seattle, Mirer spent his first four seasons with the Seahawks before being traded to the Chicago Bears - along with a fourth-round draft choice - for Chicago's first selection in the '97 draft (the 11th overall).
Mirer, who made 51 starts as a Seahawk, ranks third in Seattle's history (behind Dave Krieg and Jim Zorn) in career passing attempts (1,523), completions (814), yards (9,094) and touchdowns (41).
In 1997, his only Chicago season, he completed 53 of 103 passes for 420 yards, with 6 interceptions, while making 3 starts in 7 games.
A talented runner, he has rushed for 958 yards in 198 attempts, a 4.8-yard average, over his pro career.
Signed by the Packers' September 2, 1998, following his August 30 release by the Bears, he was the team's inactive Third Quarterback for 12 regular season games in 1998, plus the playoff game against San Francisco. Along the way, he assumed the No. 2 signal caller's role for four mid-season games while the customary backup, Doug Pederson, was sidelined by a broken jaw, but he did not play in any of those contests.
As a collegian, Mirer was a three-year starter and four-time letterman at Notre Dame and broke Joe Theismann's school record for career touchdown passes by throwing for 41 scores (a mark Ron Powlus has surpassed in the interim). Overall, he completed 377 of 698 passing attempts for 5,997 yards, with only 23 interceptions.
Mirer's departure leaves the Packers with four quarterbacks on the roster - Brett Favre, Matt Hasselbeck, Aaron Brooks and Ronnie McAda.
