The Green Bay Packers have claimed defensive tackle Antonio Dingle from the Pittsburgh Steelers on waivers, Executive Vice President/General Manager Ron Wolf announced today.

In order to make room for the newcomer on the roster, officially at the current, 65-player limit (excluding the Packersà four NFL Europe exemptions), second-year defensive end Jonathan Brown was placed on waivers.

Dingle, a 6-1, 315-pound University of Virginia product, had been a seventh-round choice of the Steelers in the NFL's 1999 draft, the 214th player chosen. A first team All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection as a junior, he recorded 48 tackles (28 solos) and 2 quarterback sacks ³ following a sophomore year in which he posted a career-high 49 stops (26 solos), two sacks and one interception. He finished his 1998, senior season with 34 tackles (18 solos), two sacks, four tackles for losses, one fumble recovery and one kick block.

As a prep, he helped lead Fayetteville, N.C., South View High School to the North Carolina 4A championship, earning team Most Valuable Player honors.

The 22-year-old Dingle has been assigned jersey number 74.

Brown, a third-round draft selection out of Tennessee in 1998, was hampered by a foot injury as a rookie, appearing in only four regular-season games.
