The Green Bay Packers joined with the Service League of Green Bay for the inaugural "NFL & United Way Hometown Huddle" on Tuesday, October 19. The event was one of many community service projects which occurred in all NFL communities across the country.
While many NFL players volunteer year-round, this national community outreach initiative marked the first time players from each of the 31 NFL teams teamed up on one designated day to participate in hands-on volunteer projects with United Way-funded agencies.
"Just as people support their hometown team, NFL players support their team's hometown," said UWA President Betty Beene. "The Hometown Huddle showcases the strong 26-year partnership of the NFL and United Way and brings greater awareness to their shared commitment to building stronger, healthier communities."
The Green Bay Packers joined forces to help needy children in Brown County by participating in the Service League's Annual Fall Fashion Show. The Service League of Green Bay is a charitable organization whose purpose is to meet the physical, educational, and emotional needs of the children of Brown County.
Appearing in the fashion show were: Carmen Rhodes, Jude Waddy, Ryan and Sarah Longwell, Melissa Davis, Lynda Chmura, Bill and Shelly Schroeder, LeRoy and Rhodesia Butler, Toni Lewis, Michelle Rivera, Jill Verba, Christine Zampese, Faith Holland, Andrea Knox, Billy and Natasha Lyon, and Shantel Williams, along with numerous other people associated with the Packers.
Hometown Huddle is the latest element in the 26-year partnership of the NFL and the United Way. By participating in the Hometown Huddle project, NFL players are reaching out to more than 3,000 individuals supported by local United Way agencies. A sampling of Hometown Huddle projects include: building new playgrounds, refurbishing football fields, conducting workshops on the importance of team-building and education, reading to the visually-impaired and serving food to the homeless.
