PACKERS SIGN CB STEVE JOHNSON TO REPLACE AKINS ON PRACTICE SQUAD
posted 10/27/99
The Green Bay Packers have signed cornerback Steve Johnson to the team's practice squad as a free agent, Executive Vice President/General Manager Ron Wolf announced today.
Johnson, a rookie from the University of Tennessee, fills the vacancy created when defensive back Chris Akins was signed off the Packers' practice squad Tuesday by the Dallas Cowboys for their 53-player active roster.
Johnson, 5-10 and 184 pounds and a sixth-round selection by Seattle in the 1999 NFL draft (the 170th player chosen), was placed on waivers by the Seahawks September 5 in their final roster cutdown for the regular season.
The 23-year-old Johnson posted a career-high 43 tackles as a senior, starting all 12 games for the Volunteers' national championship team in 1998.
Johnson, who has been assigned jersey number 23, joined the Packers on the practice field this afternoon.
Akins, 5-11 and 195 pounds, was a seventh-round selection in this year's Packers draft.
