The Green Bay Packers have signed veteran running back Rashaan Salaam and defensive back Jamel Williams as free agents, Executive Vice President/General Manager Ron Wolf announced today.
Safety Scott McGarrahan, who has been sidelined for the past two games with a hamstring injury, was placed on injured reserve to make room for Salaam while Williams, a former Washington Redskin and a third-year pro, replaces running back De'Mond Parker on the active roster. Parker has been placed on injured reserve and is scheduled to undergo surgery.
Salaam, a fourth-year pro, originally was a first-round draft selection of the Chicago Bears in 1995 out of the University of Colorado, the 21st player chosen. A 1,000-yard rusher as a rookie (1,074 yards in 296 attempts, a 3.6-yard average), the 6-1, 224-pound San Diego native followed with a 496-yard season in 1996 before suffering a knee injury in the third game of the 1997 season and spending the balance of the season on injured reserve.
Out of football in 1998 after being waived by the Bears on August 12, he went to training camp with the Oakland Raiders this season and subsequently was waived in the team's final roster reduction for the regular season September 5.
Salaam later signed with the Cleveland Browns on September 29 and had one rushing attempt for 2 yards before being waived on October 19. He had been out of football since.
The 5-11, 205-pound Williams, selected by Washington in the fifth round of the 1997 draft, led the Redskins' special teams in 1998 with 122 blocks and tied for third in kamikaze tackles with 13.
The 26-year-old Nebraska alumnus was placed on waivers September 27, following the Redskins' third game of the 1999 regular season.
Salaam, who has been assigned jersey number 39, and Williams, who will wear number 29, joined the Packers on the practice field this afternoon.
