MARQUETTE UNIVERSITY HIGH SCHOOL'S BASHAM SELECTED THE GREEN BAY PACKERS 1999 HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL COACH OF THE YEAR TO BE HONORED AT SUNDAY'S PACKERS-CARDINALS GAME
posted 12/30/99
Dick Basham, head football coach at Marquette University High School in Milwaukee, is this year's recipient of the Green Bay Packers High School Coach of the Year award.
Basham, who will be honored during Sunday's contest between the Green Bay Packers and Arizona Cardinals, coached the Hilltoppers to an 11-1 finish and captured the final WISAA State Championship this past fall. In his 28 years at Marquette University High, he led the Hilltoppers to eight WISAA Championships in 10 title game appearances.
In his 30 years of coaching, Basham has amassed a career mark of 254-65, a win total which places him as Wisconsin's all-time winningest football coach. Prior to being named head coach at Marquette, Basham coached two years at Wisconsin Rapids Assumption.
A native of Clarion, Iowa, Basham played quarterback and earned his undergraduate degree from Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, and received a masters degree in math from the University of Notre Dame.
In recognition of the award, Basham received a check for $1,000 from NFL Charities for the school's football program, in addition to being honored on Inside 1265: The Ray Rhodes Show; a Green Bay Packers team autographed football; a certificate signed by NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue, Green Bay Packers General Manager Ron Wolf and Green Bay Packers Head Coach Ray Rhodes; and t-shirts for his players and coaching staff.
The Coach of the Year selection concluded the NFL's Coach of the Week Program, which aids in the development of youth football, giving high school coaches the recognition they deserve. For nine weeks during the high school season, the Green Bay Packers and the NFL honored a high school coach from the state of Wisconsin. In company with the honor, the winning coach received several items including a $500 check from NFL Charities.
