PACKERS' AUCTION OF SIGNED JERSEYS TO SALUTE BLACK HISTORY MONTH

posted 01/31/00

In a salute to Black History Month, the Green Bay Packers in February will auction off signed jerseys of several Pro Bowl players, past and present, Gill Byrd, executive director of player programs and community affairs, announced today. All proceeds from the auctions will benefit the United Negro College Fund, Byrd said.

"In recognition of all the contributions that African-Americans have made over the years, on and off the playing field, the Green Bay Packers are committed to helping the United Negro College Fund," Byrd said. "Proceeds from the auction will go directly to the national office of UNCF."

Starting next Monday, February 7, one jersey per week will be auctioned off for a three-week period through the team's official internet site, packers.com. The identity of the jersey being auctioned off will be revealed on Monday of each week.

Though not game-worn, the authenticity of the signatures on each of the game jerseys will be validated by the Packers' equipment manager, Gordon 'Red' Batty.
