SPARTA, WIS. BOY TO COMPETE FOR CHAMPIONSHIP IN NFL GATORADE PUNT, PASS AND KICK NATIONAL FINALS

NFL Press Release
posted 01/05/00

New York, NY, January 5, 2000 --Thirty two boys and girls, ages 8-15, will compete for top honors at the NFL Gatorade Punt, Pass and Kick National Finals on Saturday, January 15, 2000, prior to the Jacksonville Jaguars AFC divisional playoff game at ALLTEL Stadium. More than 3.5 million kids nationwide participated in NFL Gatorade Punt, Pass and Kick (PP&K) in 1999.

CBS will tape the event and air it during halftime. The on-field awards presentation to each of the division winners will be broadcast live between the third and fourth quarters.

Boys and girls compete separately in four age divisions (8-9, 10-11, 12-13, 14-15), with the top composite score in each of the eight groups crowned National Champion. Each participant performs one punt, one pass and one kick, with scores based on distance minus accuracy (in feet). All 32 finalists advanced to the National Finals by winning local, sectional and Team Championship competitions held throughout the NFL regular season. Only the top four scores nationally in each age group qualify for the PP&K National Finals.

"The NFL Gatorade Punt, Pass and Kick program is the nation's largest grassroots sports skills competition," said Sara Levinson, President of NFL Properties. "Since a girls-only division was added in 1996, the number of overall participants has increased every year. Establishing a new participation record, in 1999, reinforces our belief that football is youngsters' favorite sport to play."
