MILES NAMED OFFENSIVE ASSISTANT/QUALITY CONTROL FOR PACKERS
posted 01/28/00
Trent Miles, a college coach since 1987 who has spent the past three years tutoring Fresno State's wide receivers, has been named offensive assistant/quality control for the Green Bay Packers, Head Coach Mike Sherman announced today.
In his role last season as offensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks, Sherman became acquainted with the Packers' newest coach when Miles assisted the team's offensive staff during its '99 training camp while participating in the NFL Minority Coaching Fellowship Program.
"I was very impressed with Trent, as both a coach and a person, when he was with us in Seattle last year," said Sherman. "That's why he's here."
Miles, 36, has worked on both sides of the ball during his 13-year career in the college ranks. He got his start in the coaching field in 1987 as a graduate assistant at his alma mater, Indiana State, working with the wide receivers and defensive backs. From there, he went to the University of New Mexico (1988-89), where he tutored the receivers and linebackers, and to the University of Oklahoma (1990), working with the receivers, as a grad assistant.
A native of Terre Haute, Ind., Miles moved to Northern Illinois for a four-year stint beginning in 1991, coaching the Huskies' wide receivers for the first three seasons before switching over to instruct the defensive backs his final year at the school.
Two years at the University of Hawaii (1995-96) followed, where he coached receivers for one year, defensive backs for another. Miles went to Fresno State in 1997 as the Bulldogs' wide receivers coach.
A one-time wide receiver himself at Indiana State (1982-86), Miles was a member of the Sycamores' 1983 and '84 squads, each of which won nine games and advanced to the Division I-AA playoffs. The 1984 ISU team was ranked No. 1 in the nation for much of that year. He earned a degree in criminal justice from Indiana State in 1986.
Born July 29, 1963 in Terre Haute, Ind., Miles was an all-state pick as a wide receiver at the city's South Vigo High School.
