PACKERS SIGN TE LAWRENCE HART, DT JAMES GRIER AS FREE AGENTS

posted 02/11/00

The Green Bay Packers have signed two free agents, tight end Lawrence Hart and defensive tackle James Grier, Executive Vice President/General Manager Ron Wolf announced today.

The 6-4, 260-pound Hart was a member of the Packers' practice squad for the last five weeks of the 1999 season, signing on November 24. He had been a seventh-round selection of the New York Jets in 1998 and spent that regular season on the team's practice squad after being placed on waivers August 30. He subsequently went through training camp and the preseason with the Jets in 1999 and was waived in the team's final roster reduction for the regular season September 5.

As a collegian, Hart had been a second team, All-Southwestern Athletic Conference selection as a senior at Southern, catching 13 passes for 175 yards (a 13.5-yard average) and one touchdown.

Grier, 6-5 and 307 pounds, originally was signed by the Buffalo Bills as an undrafted free agent following the 1998 NFL draft (April 24). Released August 31, 1998, he was signed to the New England practice squad October 15, finishing the season on the Patriots' unit. The Patriots subsequently signed Grier to their regular roster February 16, 1999. He later was released August 31 and was out of football for the balance of the '99 season.

Earlier, he had started 26 of 36 games at Mississippi State and recorded 136 tackles, 14 of them for losses.
