Continuing to pursue depth for the defensive line, the Green Bay Packers have signed former Pittsburgh Steelers tackle Rod Manuel as a free agent, Executive Vice President/General Manager Ron Wolf announced today.
The 6-5, 300-pound Manuel, a third-year professional, originally was a sixth-round draft selection of the Steelers out of the University of Oklahoma in 1997. He appeared in one regular-season game as a rookie and subsequently played in two games in 1998, after starting 2 preseason contests and posting 7 tackles.
Placed in the 1999 NFL Expansion Draft and selected by the Cleveland Browns February 9, 1999, Manuel was placed on waivers August 16, 1999. He was claimed by Detroit, then waived August 20 and out of football during the 1999 season.
As a collegian, Manuel registered 91 tackles as a senior starter at Oklahoma, his total including 45 solos. Transferred from tight end, the position he played in his first two seasons with the Sooners, he became a starter at defensive end for the final two games of his junior season, finishing second on the team with five quarterback sacks for 34 yards in losses.
Earlier, Manuel was an all-state and Dallas Morning News Top 100 selection as a linebacker at Western Hills High School in Fort Worth, Texas, after amassing 113 tackles and posting 11 pass deflections during his senior season.
