Moving to bolster their pass rush, the Green Bay Packers have acquired defensive end David Bowens from the Denver Broncos for an undisclosed draft choice, Executive Vice President/General Manager Ron Wolf announced today.

The 6-2, 255-pound Bowens, who began his college football career at Michigan and played his senior season at Western Illinois, appeared in all 16 games for Denver last season, posting one sack and 10 tackles. He was listed as a linebacker by the Broncos but was utilized primarily as a defensive end, the position he will play as a Packer.

Ed Donatell, the Packers' new defensive coordinator, became familiar with Bowens' talents as a member of the Broncos' coaching staff in 1999, tutoring the team's defensive backs.

Bowens, excelling as a pass rusher throughout his college career, broke Michigan's school season record as a sophomore by registering 12 quarterback sacks for the Wolverines while earning second-team All-Big Ten Conference honors.

A year earlier, he became only the second position player to start for Michigan as a true freshman, joining Rick Leach (1975). Following his highly productive sophomore season, in which he augmented his record-breaking sack efforts by forcing a pair of fumbles and blocking an extra point, he enrolled at Michigan in 1997 but did not play football in order to concentrate on academics.

Bowens transferred from Michigan to Western Illinois in 1998 and, starting the last 12 games at defensive end, amassed 134 tackles, including 77 solos and 37 tackles for loss to rank second in the Gateway Conference with the latter total. He also posted five pass deflections, forced four fumbles, recovering two, and blocked three kicks.

Earlier a prep standout, Bowens was a Blue Chip Illustrated, National Recruiting Advisor, Super Prep and Prep Football Report All-America selection at St. Mary's High School in Orchard Lake, Mich. Recording 168 tackles during his two-year career, he also was named Super Prep Midwest Player of the Year as a senior. Bowens added three letters each in basketball and track, earning all-state honors in basketball.

Wolf also announced the signing of defensive back Damian V. Johnson, out of Alabama State, as a free agent.

The 6-foot, 201-pound Johnson completed a four-year college career in 1998 and was out of football in 1999. He finished his college career with 153 tackles, including 67 as a senior, when he ranked third on the Alabama State defense, a total he complemented with 16 pass breakups and one interception.
