NEW HEAD COACH MIKE SHERMAN WILL WELCOME 66 PLAYERS TO PACKERS' FIRST MINICAMP SUNDAY; FIVE PRACTICES SCHEDULED IN DON HUTSON CENTER
posted 03/15/00
 | | The Don Hutson Center will be the site for Mike Sherman's first minicamp as head coach of the Packers. |
New Head Coach Mike Sherman, who will be meeting his team for the first time, will welcome 66 players to the Green Bay Packers' initial 2000 minicamp Sunday evening (March 19).
Sherman will assemble his squad for a 6 o'clock team dinner, the first official function on the minicamp schedule, which will conclude the camp's travel day.
The contingent will include quarterbacks Brett Favre and Matt Hasselbeck and running back Dorsey Levens.
Monday will be devoted to physical examinations, photos, equipment check, team and position meetings and conditioning.
The first camp practice is set for 10:30 Tuesday morning, with the afternoon workout slated for 2:40 p.m. There also will be two practices Wednesday
(March 22) at the same hours and a final session at 10 a.m. Thursday (March 23), with the camp closing after lunch.
All practices are scheduled to be held in the Don Hutson Center and thus closed to the public.
Hasselbeck, the team's backup quarterback last season, will enter camp with a new, multiyear contract. The former Boston College field general, a sixth-round draft selection in 1998, agreed to terms today, Andrew Brandt, director of player finance/football operations, announced.
In 1999, Hasselbeck played in all 16 games, primarily on special teams as the club's placement holder for field goal and extra point attempts. At quarterback, he completed 3 of 10 passes for 41 yards and one touchdown.
The latter, a big play, came in the Packers' rematch with the Vikings at Minneapolis (December 20) when he threw a 9-yard touchdown pass - his first in the NFL - to tight end Jeff Thomason on a fake field goal attempt to give Green Bay a brief, 20-17 lead in the fourth quarter.
Hasselbeck also was credited with 6 rushing attempts for 15 yards over the season.
