PACKERS AWARDED 4 COMPENSATORY PICKS; HAVE 14 CHOICES IN DRAFT
posted 03/28/00
With the receipt of four compensatory picks, announced today by the National Football League, the Green Bay Packers will have 14 selections in the NFL's imminent 2000 draft, the most they have had since the draft was reduced to seven rounds in 1994.
The league's annual selection meeting will be conducted the weekend of April 15-16.
The Packers' highest previous draft choice total under the current system was 12, in 1999.
In addition to the compensatory picks, the Packers will have all of their own selections in each of the seven rounds, plus three additional choices acquired in trades - a fourth round pick from the New York Jets for quarterback Rick Mirer, a fifth-round pick from the San Francisco 49ers for defensive back Craig Newsome and a seventh-round pick from the Seattle Seahawks for wide receiver Derrick Mayes.
Under the league's formula, the compensatory picks were awarded to offset the Packers' loss of guard Adam Timmerman, quarterback Doug Pederson, running backs Darick Holmes and Travis Jervey, punter Sean Landeta and defensive back Roderick Mullen.
As matters now stand, the Packers will have single selections in each of the first, second, third and sixth rounds, three in the fourth, two in the fifth and five in the seventh.
Overall, the Packers will have had 15 compensatory picks since 1994, a total second in the league only to the Dallas Cowboys, who have had 18 - none this year.
The Packers' compensatory picks to date: 1994 - RB LeShon Johnson and linebacker Paul Duckworth; 1995 - None; 1996 - Cornerback Tyrone Williams, guard Marco Rivera, and defensive end Keith McKenzie; 1997 - Quarterback Ronnie McAda; 1998 - Quarterback Matt Hasselbeck; 1999 - Defensive end Cletidus Hunt, quarterback Aaron Brooks, punter Josh Bidwell, and offensive tackle Scott Curry.
DRAFT PREVIEW: Executive Vice President/General Manager Ron Wolf will hold his annual pre-draft press conference in the media auditorium of the Packers' administration building at 1:15 p.m. Wednesday, April 5. Packers.com will have complete audio of his press conference later that afternoon.
PRESEASON SCHEDULE COMPLETE: The Packers' 2000 preseason schedule has been completed with the setting of the 40th annual Bishop's Charities Game - against the Cleveland Browns in Lambeau Field - for Saturday afternoon, August 26, Executive Vice President/General Manager Ron Wolf announced today.
Kickoff is set for 4 o'clock, CDT.
The Packers will open their non-league agenda Friday night, August 4, when they host the New York Jets in the 51st Midwest Shrine Game, a 7 o'clock contest. Nationally-televised road games against the Broncos at Denver Sunday afternoon, August 13, on the Fox Network, and against the Miami Dolphins in a "Monday Night Football" matchup on ABC will follow before they encounter the Browns. Kickoffs for the Denver and Miami games will be 3 p.m., CDT, and 7 p.m., CDT, respectively.
