Motorcycle riders from throughout the state of Wisconsin are expected to take part in a sprawling "Lambeau Field Renovation Ride" on Saturday, May 20, to demonstrate their support for the redevelopment of the Green Bay Packers' 43-year-old home.
Plans for the ride to Green Bay, which will originate in Peshtigo and include several Packers players, were announced today by a committee including Jerry Parins, the Packers' corporate security officer, and Rick Vandervest of Peshtigo's Vandervest Harley-Davidson.
With Packers General Manager Ron Wolf and players William Henderson and Matt Hasselbeck at the starting point to cheer them on, the riders will leave Peshtigo as a group at 1:30 the afternoon of May 20.
Packers Mike Wahle, Mike Flanagan and Joe Andruzzi - all motorcycle owners - will be among those in the vanguard - they also will be accompanied by tight ends coach Jeff Jagodzinski - with the caravan scheduled to arrive at Lambeau Field at approximately 3 o'clock.
The riders' arrival will launch a four-hour tailgate party, designated by the sponsors as "the first motorcycle tailgate of the millenium." There will be "live" music, concessions in the stadium's east concourse will be open, and there will be door prizes, raffles and an auction, the latter featuring items autographed by members of the University of Wisconsin's reigning Rose Bowl champions as well as the Green Bay Packers and other NFL teams, including the Super Bowl champion St. Louis Rams.
Larry McCarren, sports director of WFRV-TV and a member of the Packer Hall of Fame, will serve as master of ceremonies and state Rep. John Gard will be a special guest.
A special T-shirt has been produced to commemorate the historic occasion and will be on sale - at both Peshtigo and Lambeau Field.
For those participating in the ride, the donation will be $15 per entrant, $25 per couple. The general public is invited to attend the stadium portion of the event, for a $5 donation per person.
Proceeds of the festive, afternoon-long program, Vandervest has announced, will be earmarked to help defray the cost of redeveloping Lambeau Field.
Those who contribute $250 or more to the day's proceeds will "ride for free and be entered into a special drawing," he said.
