PACKERS SIGN VETERAN PUNTER TOM HUTTON

posted 05/16/00

The Green Bay Packers have signed punter Tom Hutton, a five-year veteran who played with the Miami Dolphins in 1999, as an unrestricted free agent, Executive Vice President/General Manager Ron Wolf announced today.

Hutton, 6-1 and 193 pounds, appeared in 14 games with the Dolphins last season after being signed on Sept. 27, 1999, following the placement of regular punter Brent Bartholomew on injured reserve. He finished the season with a 40.8-yard average (35.1 net) on 73 punts, with 22 placed "inside the 20" and only 3 touchbacks.

The 27-year-old University of Tennessee alumnus broke into the NFL in 1995 as an undrafted free agent with the Philadelphia Eagles and finished his strong rookie season with a 43.3-yard average to rank third in the NFC. He played four seasons overall with the Eagles (1995-98), appearing in 64 regular season games and three playoff contests.

Overall, the Memphis, Tenn., native, has played in 78 NFL contests and has registered 422 punts for a 42.1-yard average (34.6 net) with 99 placed "inside the 20," 40 touchbacks and a long punt of 63 yards. Hutton also has appeared in five postseason games overall, posting a 41.4-yard average on 33 punts, with a 35.9-yard net average.

Hutton, who took part in this morning's minicamp practice at the Don Hutson Center, has been assigned jersey number 12.
