LOPES RESIGNS AS VICE PRESIDENT/GENERAL COUNSEL FOR PACKERS
posted 05/19/00
Lance Lopes, in his seventh year as a member of the club's front office, resigned today as vice president and general counsel for the Green Bay Packers to pursue other interests on the West Coast.
The 36-year-old Nevada native joined the organization September 20, 1993, as legal counsel. He subsequently was promoted to assistant vice president in 1998 and to vice president/general counsel on February 16, 1999.
In announcing his resignation, Lopes said, "I am proud to have been a small part of the Green Bay Packers' return to the forefront of the NFL. I will always have the deepest admiration and respect for the organization and its fans...I had the opportunity to work with the best people in the business.
"I recently have been presented with a business opportunity that will allow me to be much closer to my extended family. I look forward to the new challenge."
Lopes, an attorney since 1989, was a key figure in orchestration of the Packers' latest stock sale, launched in November of 1997. He was instrumental in obtaining approval from securities officials and the National Football League, and also designed and administered the distribution plan and helped coordinate the marketing activities, which concluded in March of 1998 following the sale of more than $24 million in stock.
Prior to joining the Packer Corporation, Lopes was in the private civil practice of law from 1989 until 1993 - for two years in Honolulu and three years in Seattle.
An honors graduate of Linfield College (McMinville, Ore.) with a B.A. degree, he earned his law degree at the University of Oregon in 1988. Lopes and his wife, Mari, have three children.
