The Green Bay Packers have agreed to contract terms with quarterback Danny Wuerffel, who last week led the Rhein Fire to the NFL Europe League championship, Executive Vice President/General Manager Ron Wolf announced today.

The 26-year-old Wuerffel, the 1996 Heisman Trophy winner, was named to the NFLEL's all-league team after escorting the Fire to a 7-3 record and league regular-season honors. The former University of Florida star climaxed an outstanding personal season - he closed out the year with an impressive 107.2 quarterback rating - by escorting the Rhein Fire to a 13-10, come-from-behind victory over the Scottish Claymores in the World Bowl last Sunday.

The 6-1, 212-pound Fort Walton, Fla., native, originally a fourth-round draft choice of the New Orleans Saints in 1997, completed 161 of 260 passes for 2,042 yards (a 61.9 percentage) and 25 touchdowns - with only 7 interceptions - during the NFLEL regular season, emerging with the league's second-best passer rating. He also was the team's third-ranking rusher with 80 yards in 24 attempts, a 3.3-yard average, and 2 touchdowns.

In three previous seasons with the Saints (1997-98-99), Wuerffel played in 16 games, with six starts, completing 126 of 258 passes for 1,404 yards and 9 touchdowns, with 16 interceptions. He became a free agent in February when the Saints did not make him a qualifying offer.

With Wuerffel's addition, the Packers now have five quarterbacks on their roster. He joins veterans Brett Favre, Matt Hasselbeck and Aaron Brooks and rookie Ben Sankey, a free agent from Wake Forest.
