The Green Bay Packers have acquired fullback Marvin Powell from the New Orleans Saints in exchange for tight end Lawrence Hart, Executive Vice President/General Manager Ron Wolf announced today.

Powell, who is 24 and a second-year professional out of USC, played in nine games for New Orleans as a rookie in 1999, primarily on special teams. He posted 2 special teams tackles and had one rushing attempt for a one-yard gain.

The 6-2, 235-pound Californian played safety, linebacker, tight end and fullback during his career at USC, catching four passes for 13 yards in 12 games as a senior in 1998. His father, Marvin, was a two-time All-American offensive tackle (1975-1976) at USC and subsequently the fourth selection of 1977 NFL draft, going on to earn All-Pro honors during his 11-year career with the New York Jets and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Hart, who spent time on the practice squads of both the Packers and the New York Jets in 1999, recently played for the Rhein Fire in the NFL Europe League's 2000 season, starting 9 of 11 games, including the Fire's World Bowl victory over the Scottish Claymores. He finished the season with 18 receptions for 179 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Originally a seventh-round draft selection of the Jets in 1998, Hart spent the '98 season on the team's practice squad. He had been a second-team All-SWAC selection as a senior at Southern University.
