 | | Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila |
Continuing to officially fill out their roster as training camp nears, the Green Bay Packers have signed defensive end Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila of San Diego State, their first of two fifth-round choices in the 2000 draft, Andrew Brandt, the team's director of player finance/football operations, announced today.
The 6-foot-4, 244-pound Gbaja-Biamila (pronounced 'BAH-jah BEE-ah-MIL-lah'), signed to a multi-year contract, started 35 consecutive games for the Aztecs and set the school's all-time record with 33 quarterback sacks while becoming a three-time, first-team all-conference selection.
He closed out a distinguished collegiate career by posting a conference-leading 12 quarterback sacks as a senior in 1999 and becoming a finalist for the 'Bronko Nagurski Award,' given annually to the top defensive player in the nation. He finished the '99 season with 62 tackles
(37 solos), following a 76-tackle harvest in 1998.
He earlier capped his prep career with a memorable final season at Crenshaw High School in Los Angeles, recording 17 quarterback sacks, 17 QB hurries and 89 tackles en route to winning All-Central City honors. In addition, he broke up 9 passes and blocked 2 punts and one field goal.
With Gbaja-Biamila's signing, the Packers now have nine of this year's 13 draft selections under contract. He joins nose tackle Steve Warren of Nebraska, third round; linebacker Na'il Diggs of Ohio State, fourth round; kick returner/wide receiver Joey Jamison of Texas Southern, fifth round; and offensive tackle Mark Tauscher of Wisconsin, defensive tackle Ron Moore of Northwestern Oklahoma State, wide receiver Charles Lee of Central Florida, linebacker Eugene McCaslin of the University of Florida, and running back Rondell Mealey of LSU, all seventh-round selections.
Remaining to be signed: Tight end Daniel "Bubba" Franks of the University of Miami (Fla.), first round; offensive tackle Chad Clifton of Tennessee, second round; and wide receiver Anthony Lucas of Arkansas and safety Gary Berry of Ohio State, fourth round.
