Thanksgiving Turkeys

posted 11/24/00

In the spirit of Thanksgiving and as a result of a long-running practical joke, Packers Head Coach Mike Sherman will donate nine turkeys to Paul's Pantry, a Green Bay area food bank.

On Wednesday, players and staff members received a memo instructing them to pick up a free turkey or ham at Sentry Foods, a nearby grocery store.

Little did rookies and first-year players know they were being set up for a prank that now has been a Packers' Thanksgiving tradition for many years.

The unexpecting Packers were safety Chris Akins, offensive tackles Chad Clifton and Mark Tauscher, linebacker Na'il Diggs, defensive end Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila, wide receivers Charles Lee and Kenny Coutain, defensive tackle Steve Warren, and Bruce Warwick, the Packers' director of football administration.

With hidden cameras zeroing in on the unknowing players, each proceeded turkey-in-hand to the store's checkout counter, where they were surprised to be informed that the birds would indeed cost them full price.

When they arrived at Lambeau Field Thursday morning, the young players were subject to veterans' ridicule that is as customary as the joke itself.

Sherman also informed them that he would be donating one turkey in each of their names to the food pantry.

"That's good," said Gbaja-Biamila. "They got me with that. But as long as it helps others in the end, it's fine. It's all in good fun, and I guess that's part of being a rookie."
