PACKERS CLAIM OG RICHARD MERCIER, PUT COREY BRADFORD ON INJURED RESERVE
posted 12/22/00
The Green Bay Packers have claimed offensive guard Richard Mercier from the Denver Broncos on waivers, Executive Vice President/General Manager Ron Wolf announced today.
The 6-3, 300-pound Mercier (pronounced mer-see-EH), accorded All-America honors by The Sporting News as a senior in 1999, originally was a fifth-round selection of the Baltimore Ravens in the NFL's 2000 draft. Placed on waivers August 26, he was signed to Baltimore's practice squad on August 29. He later was signed to the Denver Broncos' 53-player roster November 15 and waived December 21.
A native of Canada, Mercier also was selected in the second round of the Canadian Football League's 2000 draft, in which he was the 15th player chosen. He had been an All-Provincial defensive lineman at Vannier, Quebec, College before transferring to Miami.
The 25-year-old Mercier has been assigned jersey number 69. He will join the Packers on the practice field Saturday.
Funeral services for Joanne Brookhart Devine, wife of former Green Bay Packers head coach/general manager Dan Devine, will be held at the Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Ahwautukee, Ariz., at 9:30 a.m. next Wednesday
(December 27).
Mrs. Devine, long ill with multiple sclerosis, died at her home Tuesday
(December 19) at the age of 74.
She is survived by her husand of 53 years, Daniel J. Devine, seven children, 16 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and two brothers.
There will be visitation at the Carr-Tenney Mortuary (2621 S. Rural Road) in Tempe Tuesday evening (December 26), between the hours of 5 and 8 p.m., with the rosary to be recited at 7 o'clock.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be sent to the Joanne Brookhart Devine Multiple Sclerosis Endowment Fund, MU Health Care M. S. Institute, DC 205.00, Columbia, Mo., 65212.
