PACKERS SPREAD HOLIDAY CHEER THROUGH CHARITABLE EFFORTS
posted 12/24/00
As the holiday season climaxes, the Green Bay Packers continue their outreach efforts locally and around the state of Wisconsin.
In addition to the organization's standard goodwill endeavors, which in 2000 included 7,500 merchandise donations and over 300 charity appearances, the team and several individual players have committed extra attention to the needs of others during the month of December.
At the final three home games, the Packers and Visa have presented a total of $25,000 to three different non-profit organizations - Very Special Arts of Madison ($5,000 on November 19), Boys and Girls Club ($10,000 on December 10) and United Way of Brown County ($10,000 on December 24).
Through self-imposed fines during the course of the season, the defensive line collected $2,300 and used it to purchase clothing for Milwaukee's Frances Starms Early Childhood Center.
Brian Williams and Antonio Freeman each have hosted 60 children over the Packers' final two home games, as both players purchased and donated 30 seats for each game. Freeman's guests came from the Oneida Tribe, while
"Williams' Warriors" all hail from the Milwaukee area.
Darren Sharper and William Henderson also brought in a total of 60 young Packers fans for the Tampa Bay contest. "Sharper Kids," from Madison, were recognized for academic and athletic excellence, while "Henderson's Heroes" were chosen from the Milwaukee area based upon academics and community service.
Players "adopted" 33 families through the Salvation Army's Adopt-A-Family program, donating over $10,000 for toys, clothes and food.
The Packers helped provide 200 families with Christmas dinners, donating and distributing hams and other food items to both Paul's Pantry and the Salvation Army.
Grants totaling $23,000 were given by the Packers to Wisconsin charities as part of the Community Quarterback awards, a program that recognizes individuals' commitments to service and rewards their respective non-profits.
