The Green Bay Packers have re-signed veteran tight end Tyrone Davis, Andrew Brandt, the team's director of player finance, announced today.

The 28-year-old Davis, who is entering his sixth NFL season, had been an unrestricted free agent since March 2.

Last season, the 6-4, 260-pound University of Virginia graduate backed up first-round draft selection Bubba Franks at tight end for the greater part of the year. Playing through a shoulder problem most of the season, Davis saw action in 14 games, starting nine. He also was inactive for one contest and did not play in another, closing out the year as the team's seventh-ranking receiver with 19 catches - one short of his career-high - for 177 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Davis, who also recorded a 2-point conversion against Buffalo (9/10), underwent postseason arthroscopic surgery (12/27) to repair a partial thickness tear in his right rotator cuff.

A starter for 13 games in 1999, Davis initially withstood a substantial preseason challenge from Franks to retain the starting role in 2000, but then looked on as the rookie appropriated his job when he was sidelined by the shoulder problem. Davis started the first four games, then sat out the next two contests because of a right shoulder strain before returning to the field in a reserve capacity vs. San Francisco (10/15).

Davis subsequently made a spot start for Franks vs. Detroit (12/10), also opening in four other games when the Packers started out in a double-tight end formation.

Along the way, the former Cavalier caught a four-yard touchdown pass to open the scoring in the Packers' season opener against his former team, the New York Jets (9/3). He also posted a career-high 5 receptions (for 41 yards) in Green Bay's 6-3 victory over Philadelphia (9/17).

Davis, acquired from the New York Jets by way of an August 25, 1997 trade, has caught 59 passes for 659 yards and 12 touchdowns in four seasons with the Packers.
