PACKERS AWARDED ONE COMPENSATORY CHOICE IN DRAFT; HAVE 8 TOTAL PICKS
posted 03/26/01
 | | DE John Thierry was the only unrestricted free agent signed by the Packers in 2000. |
The Green Bay Packers have been awarded one compensatory choice in the 2001 National Football League draft, it was announced today by the NFL.
Awarding of the selection, a sixth-round pick (198), was based on the Packers having lost defensive linemen Vaughn Booker and Keith McKenzie in free agency last year, while signing defensive end John Thierry of the Cleveland Browns. The number of picks a team receives equals the net loss of compensatory free agents up to a maximum of four.
With the choice in the upcoming draft (April 21-22), the Packers will have received 16 compensatory picks since the system was implemented in 1993, tying them with the Buffalo Bills for the second-most acquired during that nine-year span. The Dallas Cowboys have been awarded the highest total, 21.
Overall, including the compensatory pick, the Packers will have eight selections in the seven rounds of the draft, including five of the first 82 picks. They include two from Seattle in the Matt Hasselbeck trade (rounds 1
(10) and 3 (72); their own second-round selection (47); their own third-round choice (80) as well as a third from New Orleans (82) acquired, along with linebacker K.D. Williams, in the trade which sent quarterback Aaron Brooks and tight end Lamont Hall to New Orleans last year; their own sixth-round pick (170); and a seventh-round choice from St. Louis (207) in the 1999 trade which sent linebacker Mike Morton to the Rams.
The Packers also owe four choices in the draft - their first-round pick (No. 17) to Seattle in the Hasselbeck trade; their fourth-round selection (No. 110) to Denver for linebacker Nate Wayne, acquired August 15, 2000; their fifth-round pick (No. 140) to Philadelphia for kick returner Allen Rossum, acquired August 25, 2000; and their seventh-round pick (No. 204) to Denver for defensive end David Bowens, acquired February 24, 2000.
