LAMBEAU FIELD GROUNDBREAKING CELEBRATION DETAILS ANNOUNCED
posted 04/18/01
A world record breaking charity fundraiser, Green Bay Packers players from the past and present and a community contest will all be a part of the May 19, 2001 Lambeau Field Ceremonial Groundbreaking Celebration. The event is free and open to the public.
"There are a number of fun and exciting things that will happen, including the opportunity for two children from the community at large to participate in the actual groundbreaking ceremony" said John Jones, Senior Vice President of Administration for the Green Bay Packers. "In addition there will be a fun and unique fundraiser for Special Olympics which the community can also participate in."
Details of the celebration were released at a news conference today. A brief overview of the celebration includes:
- A Groundbreaking Essay Contest. Children between the ages of 6 and 12, who live in Brown County, are being asked to submit a brief essay (25 words or less) to explain why they would like to be a part of the groundbreaking ceremony. A panel of celebrity judges will select one boy and one girl to take part. (Essay contest details on page 3 of this release) The pair will join several former and current Green Bay Packer players in breaking ground at the May 19th festivities. In addition, the two youngsters selected will each receive a Green Bay Packers player jersey of their choice, to be autographed by the player at a later date, and 4 tickets to a future Green Bay Packers home game, where they will be publicly introduced.
- The Lambeau Hug to benefit Special Olympics. Fans of all ages will join together in an attempt to set a new world 'group hug" record. The current group hug record, published in the 2001 Guinness Book of World Records, is 899 people. A pre-registration party with music and food is scheduled for Friday, May 18 in front of the old Brown County Arena from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
To participate in the hug, the pre-registration fee is $10.00. Those interested will soon be able to obtain registration forms at ShopKo stores statewide or they can call the Hug Hotline at Special Olympics Wisconsin: 1-800-707-2422 or 920-497-2422.
Registration on the day of the event is $15.00. Check-in for Lambeau hug participants starts at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 19. At 9:00 a.m., participants will begin entering the stadium. Then, at 9:45 a.m. sharp, an aerial photograph will be taken to verify number of people giving Lambeau Field a hug.
"We are very excited to be a part of this historic day," said Terri Refsguard, Area Director for Special Olympics Wisconsin. "This is a fun way to set a new world record as well as a Lambeau Field record - and to take part in a great fundraising event to benefit Special Olympics."
- Live entertainment before and during the groundbreaking event will be provided by the Preble High School and West De Pere High School bands, as well as by the St. Norbert and U.W. Green Bay cheerleaders.
- The ceremonial groundbreaking program and ceremony will take place inside Lambeau Field. The ceremony will include a flag presentation by an area Boy Scout and Girl Scout troop, appearances by former and current Green Bay Packer players (confirmation of attendance is pending) and a special presentation to the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame.
- A community tailgate party will immediately follow the ceremony in the Lambeau parking lot.
"We believe this will be a fun family and community event. It's a way for area residents, who have shown such tremendous support for the Packers, to be a part of what's happening with Lambeau Field," added Jones.
