PACKERS SIGN DEFENSIVE TACKLE DEVONE CLAYBROOKS AS FREE AGENT

posted 05/18/01

The Green Bay Packers have signed defensive tackle DeVone Claybrooks of East Carolina University as a free agent, Andrew Brandt, the team's director of player finance, announced today.

Claybrooks, 6-3 and 292 pounds, was a two-year starter for East Carolina's Pirates, closing out his career in 2000 with a career-high 42 tackles and emerging as the team leader in tackles for loss (8 for a minus-36 yards).

The 23-year-old Bassett, Va., native also recorded his first career interception - against Louisville - and climaxed his last collegiate season with a career-best three sacks in ECU's final regular season game against Southern Mississippi. Claybrooks augmented these contributions by forcing two fumbles, recovering two, and blocking two kicks.

The newcomer has been assigned jersey number 77.
