The Green Bay Packers have signed cornerback Andre Dixon as a free agent, Andrew Brandt, the team's director of player finance, announced today.

It is the second time around in Green Bay for the former Northeastern (Massachusetts) University athlete, 6-1 and 200 pounds, who originally signed with the Packers as an undrafted free agent in 1999, and was released in the final cutdown for the regular season (September 5). In the interim, he had been on the practice squads of the Detroit Lions and New England Patriots for brief periods during the 1999 and 2000 seasons.

The 25-year-old Dixon was a three-year starter and four-time letterman at Northeastern, where he totaled 171 tackles (115 solo) and 6 interceptions over his varsity career, earning first-team, All-Atlantic Conference honors in his senior season after winning second-team, all-conference recognition as a junior. He also ran the 100- and 200-meter dashes for the school's track team.

The newcomer has been assigned jersey number 38.

In other transactions, the Packers released safety Gary Berry, placing him on waivers as failed/physical, and also waived cornerback Hurley Tarver. Berry, a fourth-round draft selection out of Ohio State in the 2000 NFL draft, suffered a neck injury on the opening kickoff of the game against Chicago October 1 and subsequently was inactive for the next three games before being placed on season-ending injured reserve October 31.
