PACKERS RE-SIGN RUNNING BACK RAFAEL COOPER AS FREE AGENT
posted 06/07/01
The Green Bay Packers have re-signed running back Rafael Cooper as a free agent, Andrew Brandt, the team's director of player finance, announced today.
The 26-year-old Cooper had previously been in training camp with the Packers during the 2000 preseason, the former Louisville University athlete having been signed on August 9, following a standout season in the Indoor Football League, one which saw him emerge as the league's ninth-ranking scorer with 138 points in 14 games as a member of the Erie Invaders. He also was the Invaders' leading rusher, gaining 890 yards in 215 attempts, a 3.9-yard average, and scoring 18 touchdowns.
Cooper subsequently returned 2 kickoffs for 31 yards, a 15.5-yard average, after joining the Packers and before being placed on waivers in the team's final roster reduction for the regular season August 28.
Undrafted and out of football in 1999, the 5-11, 205-pound Cooper finished his collegiate career at Louisville in 1998, gaining 171 yards on 42 rushing attempts and catching 131 passes for 66 yards. He also had 15 kickoff returns for 281 yards, an 18.7-yard average.
Cooper, who played for the Memphis Maniax of the XFL during its recent 2001 season, joined the Packers on the practice field this morning for today's minicamp workout. He has been assigned jersey number 40.
