SHERMAN NAMES HOWARD ASST. DIRECTOR OF PRO PERSONNEL FOR PACKERS

posted 06/13/01

Sean Howard, previously a scout for the San Francisco 49ers, has been named assistant director of pro personnel for the Green Bay Packers, GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman announced today.

A former outside linebacker at UCLA as a collegian, the 31-year-old Howard replaces Vince Workman, who has been re-assigned to new responsibilities as a weight room assistant to Barry Rubin, the team's strength and conditioning coach.

Howard, a member of the 49ers' scouting staff since 1999, will assist Reggie McKenzie, the team's director of pro personnel. The possessor of a BA degree in political science (1992) from UCLA and a juris doctor degree (1996) from the University of Oregon, Howard had joined the Los Angeles firm of Catellus Real Estate Development after completing the latter degree, serving from August, 1996 until October of 1997, when he became a senior law clerk for Girardi & Keese, Attorneys at Law, also in Los Angeles.

The San Mateo, Calif., native, a consensus USA Today All-American as a senior at Crespi High School in Encino, Calif., became a three-year letter winner as a collegian before seeing his playing days terminated by career-ending knee surgery prior to his senior year at UCLA. Subsequently, as a senior law clerk, he discovered that he preferred a football career to the practice of law and launched his association with the National Football League in June of 1999, when he signed on as a pro personnel scout for the 49ers.

His decision should not have come as a surprise, considering his family background. His father, Larry, was a defensive end on the University of Wisconsin's 1963 Rose Bowl team and later played semi-pro football, and his brother, Bryan, won two letters as an offensive guard at the University of Kansas before having what Howard termed "a short stint" with the Denver Broncos at the professional level.

Sherman, in announcing Howard's addition to the team's football operation, said, "Sean has a multifaceted and diverse background. Not only has he worked for the last two years in the 49er personnel office, which will benefit us, he also has a law background which could prove beneficial to us in dealing with such issues as free agents, contracts, and the salary cap.

"More importantly than that, Sean fits in well with our present staff and should allow Reggie McKenzie to have the flexibility to get more involved in the evaluation of college players as he takes on a more expansive role in the organization."

Howard, who will be married to Amy Snell on Saturday (June 16), will formally begin his Packers duties July 9.

Marc Lillibridge, who has been a member of the department since July of 2000, will continue in the role of pro personnel assistant, Sherman said.

Sherman also announced that Shaun Herock "has withdrawn his name from consideration for the director of college scouting position with the Washington Redskins and will remain with the Packers in his role as assistant director of college scouting.

"I am extremely excited that Shaun has decided to remain a Packer," he said. "He will play a significant role in the future of the organization. He is not only a talented evaluator but also someone who fits in well with the personnel staff, fits in well in this organization, and fits in well in Green Bay, Wis.

"Shaun told me of his decision on Tuesday of this week after returning from an interview with Director of Player Personnel John Schneider and Redskins Head Coach Marty Schottenheimer."
