The Green Bay Packers have signed tight end David Martin of the University of Tennessee, their sixth-round selection in this year's National Football League draft, Andrew Brandt, the team's director of player finance, announced today.

A wide receiver as a collegian, the 6-4, 242-pound Martin has been moved to tight end by the Packers' coaching staff to capitalize on his potential for growth - both physically and in the development of his playing skills.

A four-time letterman at Tennessee, where he started portions of the past two seasons and was a member of the Vols' national championship team in 1998, he closed out his college career with 46 pass receptions for 543 yards (an 11.8-yard average) and 5 touchdowns. He started six games during the 2000 season, including the last five, and finished the season with a career-high 29 catches for 285 yards and 3 TDs to rank third on the team. Posted a career-best 12 receptions for 73 yards against Louisiana State, missing the school record by one catch.

Martin, the 198th player chosen, is the first of the Packers' six 2001 draft selections to be placed under contract.
