ADAM NEWMAN AND THE RHEIN FIRE COMPETE FOR SPOT IN WORLD BOWL 2001
posted 06/20/01
 | | Adam Newman |
The date is set, the stadium is ready and for the next two weeks the Barcelona Dragons will be preparing -- the only question that still remains is who their opponent will be in World Bowl IX.
The Rhein Fire and the Berlin Thunder, both 5-4 going into Week 10, will hope to come out as victors and move onto the 2001 World Bowl. The Amsterdam Admirals (4-5) still have a shot, as well, to see post-season action in front of their own fans on June 30 at Amsterdam Arena in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
In Week 9, the Rhein Fire added another "W" to their record when they defeated the Frankfurt Galaxy 17-13 in front of 51,719 -- the third largest NFL Europe crowd in the history of the league and the largest since 1995.
Packers-allocated tight end Adam Newman recorded his 7th start, had an 11-yard reception and notched a special teams tackle in the win.
The Fire will take on the Scottish Claymores (3-6) in Glasgow, Scotland on Saturday. If the Fire win and the Thunder lose, Rhein would make their fourth World Bowl appearance in five years.
The Berlin Thunder stayed in World Bowl contention when they pummeled the Admirals 41-10 in Berlin. The two teams will face each other again this Saturday, with the winner possibly going onto the World Bowl. The Thunder need a win and a Fire loss in order to see the post-season. If the Fire lose and Amsterdam wins, there will be a three-way tie for second place which would be settled by tiebreakers (in order: head to head results, combined offensive/defensive rankings, overall points differential). The Thunder's
Kenny Coutain was inactive in Week 9 due to a knee injury.
On Saturday in Barcelona, the Dragons continued to get ready for World Bowl IX with a 26-7 win over the Scottish Claymores.
Green Bay Packers allocated defensive end London Dunlap and the Claymores will end their season when they host the Fire in the final week of the 2001 NFL Europe season. The Claymores will not be in contention for World Bowl IX.
Amsterdam Admirals' Safety Gana Joseph was inactive in Week 9 due to a shoulder injury.
THE TIE-BREAKER SYSTEM
1. Head-to-head (best won-lost-tied percentage in games among the tied clubs)
2. Best combined offensive and defensive rankings, as listed in the official NFLEL statistics.
Note: Offensive rankings are based on total net yards gained (passing plus rushing). Defensive rankings are based on fewest net yards allowed (passing plus rushing).
Example: Team A is ranked 1 on offense and 3 on defense (4 ranking points). Team B is ranked 3 on offense and 2 on defense (5 ranking points). Team A wins tie-breaker by virtue of lower ranking points total.
3. Best points differential in all games
4. Best net touchdowns
5. Coin toss
Rhein, Berlin and Amsterdam would all have split their season series if they end up tied after the final game (Amsterdam can only be involved in a tie if they gain revenge for last week's 41-10 loss to Berlin and therefore split their series).
For the tiebreaker system not to come into operation either Rhein or Berlin needs to win, while the other loses. That would leave one team ahead of the pack at 6-4.
But if Berlin and Rhein both win their final games, the next tie-breaker to be used will be the teams' combined offensive and defensive rankings. The two teams are currently tied.
