On June 30, World Bowl IX will take place at Amsterdam Arena between the top two finishers of the 2001 NFL Europe season. This game has the potential to break scoring records, since the last time the two teams met they scored a league-record 90 points; the World Bowl record is 62.

Unfortunately, Green Bay Packers-allocated players Adam Newman and London Dunlap will not be part of the potential record-breaking game. Although both players had strong years, their teams finished short of World Bowl contention. The Rhein Fire needed a win over Dunlap and the Scottish Claymores to capture a spot in the title game, but the Claymores came up victorious, beating the Fire 34-21 in the final week of regular season action.

Newman, a tight end, who was originally signed as an undrafted free agent by the Packers in 1999, played in all 10 games for the Fire, including eight starts. The Newton, Mass. native, who was resigned by the Packers as a free agent on Jan. 8, 2001, caught five passes for 53 yards and one touchdown while recording a special teams tackle during the 2001 NFLE season.

Dunlap, the NFLE Special Teams Player of the Week for Week 1, also signed with the Packers as a free agent on Jan. 8 and started eight of 10 games during the NFLE season. The defensive end recorded 15 tackles, two sacks, one pass defensed, one forced fumble and four special teams tackles during his time with the Claymores.

Kenny Coutain did not play for the majority of the 2001 season due to injury. The wide receiver was on his way to a successful season, starting four games before being placed on injured reserve due to knee injury in Week 5. Coutain, who was signed by the Packers as an undrafted free agent in April of 2000 and resigned as a free agent on Jan. 4, 2001, also had seven receptions for 44 yards and a touchdown.

Amsterdam safety Gana Joseph, who signed as a free agent with Green Bay on Feb. 12, 2001, spent most of the 2001 NFLE season on injured reserve due to shoulder injury.
