| PACKERS SIGN PENN STATE CORNERBACK BHAWOH JUE, THIRD-ROUND DRAFTEE
posted 07/11/01
The Green Bay Packers have signed Penn State cornerback Bhawoh Jue, the first of their two third-round selections in this year's NFL draft, Andrew Brandt, the team's director of player finance, announced today. Jue, a three-year letterman (1998-2000) for the Nittany Lions, thus becomes the third of the Packers' six 2001 draftees to be signed, joining offensive guard Bill Ferrario of Wisconsin (fourth round) and tight end David Martin of Tennessee (sixth round). The 22-year-old Virginia native (the name is pronounced "b-OW JOO") played in 41 games overall, starting 15, and closed out his collegiate career with 99 total tackles (79 solo). He also posted 7 interceptions among 28 passes defensed and was credited with 1 forced fumble. Starting all 12 games for Penn State in the 2000 season, he closed out the year with 43 tackles (33 solo), 3 interceptions to tie for the team lead and 16 pass breakups, ranking fourth in the Big Ten Conference with the latter total. As a prep, Jue was an Associated Press first-team all-state selection on both offense and defense as a senior at Chantilly (Va.) High School, leading his team to the AAA state championship in the process as a defensive back and tailback. He rushed for 1,252 yards and 15 touchdowns, averaging 7.6 yards per carry, and led his team with 29 receptions for 758 yards and 6 TD as a senior. He also registered 3 interceptions and made 73 tackles on defense. In another transaction, the Packers waived first-year running back Rafael Cooper of Louisville. |
