| PACKERS SIGN SPRAGAN, FONTANA OF NFL EUROPE LEAGUE AS FREE AGENTS
posted 07/18/01
The Green Bay Packers have signed linebacker Donnie Spragan and tight end Stevan Fontana, NFL Europe performers during the league's recent 2001 season, as free agents, Andrew Brandt, the team's director of player finance, announced today. The 25-year-old Spragan, 6-3 and 244 pounds, played for the Amsterdam Admirals, and Fontana, 23 years old, 6-5 and 266 pounds, for the Scottish Claymores of the NFLEL. Spragan, a Stanford University alumnus, originally was signed by the New Orleans Saints as a free agent after completing his collegiate career in 1999, one which saw him register 103 total tackles and 7 quarterback sacks. He suffered a knee injury during the preseason and spent the '99 regular season on injured reserve. Spragan was out of football in 2000. Fontana, out of Northern Arizona, was an undrafted free agent in 2000 after closing out his collegiate career for the Jacks in 1999 with 46 pass receptions for 585 yards, a 12.7-yard average, and 5 touchdowns. Spragan has been assigned jersey number 53 and Fontana number 47. They replace wide receiver Kenny Coutain and cornerback Gana Joseph on the Packers' training camp roster. Both NFLEL players in the '01 season, Coutain and Joseph have been placed on reserve/non-football injury/Europe League. |
