The Green Bay Packers have signed linebacker Torrance Marshall of Oklahoma, the second of their third-round selections in the NFL's 2001 draft, to a three-year contract, Andrew Brandt, the club's director of player finance, announced today.

A gifted athlete acquired with a draft pick secured from Seattle in the Matt Hasselbeck trade, Marshall was a two-year starter at Oklahoma, amassing 202 tackles over that span and serving as team captain in 2000 for the national champion Sooners.

The 6-2, 255-pound Miami, Fla., native punctuated a standout senior season with a team-leading 72 solo tackles and 5 quarterback sacks. He augmented these contributions with 17 tackles for loss, equaling his school record-tying total from 1999, and posting 3 interceptions among 10 passes defensed.

Closing out his collegiate career on a high note, Marshall subsequently earned 'Most Valuable Player' honors in the Orange Bowl and also was chosen defensive MVP for the North squad in last January's Senior Bowl. He also was a first-team, All-Big 12 Conference selection and was accorded third-team All-America recognition by The Associated Press and The Sporting News.

Marshall launched his college career at Kemper Military Academy, where he accumulated a two-season total of 182 tackles, blocking 4 punts and 4 field goal tries to highlight his sophomore season.

Packers linebackers coach Bo Pelini, patently impressed with the newcomer's athletic skills, says of him, "Torrance is a big, physical presence who has a lot of athletic ability. He's a tremendous athlete for a middle linebacker. He runs extremely well - he runs a 4.40 in the '40,' which is unusual for a guy you project as an inside linebacker. His athletic ability and speed show up on the field."

With Marshall in the fold, defensive end Jamal Reynolds of Florida State, the team's No. 1 selection, is the only Packers '01 draftee left unsigned.
