SELLOUT? TICKET SALES FOR PACKERS 'FAMILY NIGHT' SCRIMMAGE SURGE OVER 47,500
posted 07/31/01
Prospects of a record crowd, possibly a sellout, for the third annual
"Packers Family Night, presented by Fox 11" mounted today as ticket sales for this weekend's event soared over the 47,500 mark.
The family-oriented production, to be highlighted by the team's annual intrasquad scrimmage, will be held in Lambeau Field Saturday night (August 4).
Last year's second such event drew 50,240 fans, following a turnout of 46,420 for the first "Family Night, presented by Fox 11" in 1999. With the customarily substantial day-of-scrimmage sale of tickets at the gate, Saturday night's attendance is expected to surpass the 50,000 mark.
The scrimmage, scheduled to begin at approximately 8:00 p.m., will be followed by an on-field question-answer session with GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman.
As in the past two years, the evening's program will include a giveaway of players' jerseys, a feature which has become a popular "Family Night" tradition, and a fireworks display to conclude the evening.
Stadium gates are scheduled to open at 5:30 p.m., with pre-scrimmage programming to feature showing of the Packers' 2001 highlight film, "A Strong Finish and a Bright Future."
With the redevelopment of Lambeau Field in progress, and related concerns posed by the ongoing construction to be dealt with, fans attending the "Family Night" event are asked to use the occasion as a test run for the 10 games to be played in "Lambeau" during the 2001 season immediately ahead.
Parking again will be free of charge, with the lot opening at 3:30 p.m. Because of the construction restrictions, fans - with the exception of the handicapped - will need to enter the parking lot from South Oneida Street only. Access to parking for the handicapped will be through the Lombardi Avenue entrance.
Preparation for the scrimmage will begin when the team takes to Lambeau Field at 7 o'clock for warm-ups and stretching. The players then will proceed through agility and 7-on-7 drills in preparation for the evening's main event.
The controlled scrimmage will follow, after which Fox 11 Sports Director Drew Smith will conduct the on-field question and answer session with Coach Sherman and selected Packers players.
Next, fans will have an opportunity to win the "Shirt Off Our Back," with approximately 20 jerseys, all of which will have been worn by the players in the just-completed scrimmage, to be given away in a random drawing.
The fireworks display then will cap a full and eventful evening.
The first 30,000 persons passing through the stadium gates will receive a team-oriented giveaway item, courtesy of WLUK-TV Fox 11 and the Green Bay Packers.
Up to and including the day of the scrimmages, tickets - economically priced at $6 - may be purchased in person or over the telephone. In-person sales are being conducted at a number of locations, including the Packers ticket office at Lambeau Field, the Brown County Veterans Memorial Arena box office and all Ticket Star outlets. Area Ticket Star outlets include Cub Foods in Appleton, Copps Food Center in Manitowoc and Curly's Foods in Marinette.
Telephone sales can be executed by calling 920-494-3401 in Green Bay, or toll-free at 800-895-0071.
The event will be televised in the Green Bay area on WLUK-TV Fox 11, as well as throughout the state of Wisconsin on associated Fox stations, beginning at 7 o'clock with special pre-scrimmage programming. The three-hour telecast will be hosted by Drew Smith and the Fox 11 Sports staff.
